Sushi 101

What is sushi?

Sushi comes from a Japanese word meaning “sour rice.” It is a traditional Japanese dish made of small portions of vinegar-soaked rice and raw fish, vegetables or egg.

What are the different types of sushi?

These are a few of the most common types of sushi and you’ll find most of them at Hissho!

Maki – This rolled sushi is usually wrapped in nori (seaweed) or rice paper and sliced into six or eight pieces per serving.

Nigiri – Thinly sliced raw fish is pressed atop sushi rice and garnished beautifully for a simple, yet flavorful delicacy.

Sashimi – Not technically sushi since it does not include rice, this dish consists of thinly sliced raw fish with simple garnishes like radish or green onion.

Uramaki – This style is sometimes called inside-out-sushi because it’s like maki, but the rice is on the outside and the seaweed is on the inside.

Tekamaki – Sometimes called hand rolls, these larger rolls are like ice cream cones filled with rice, vegetables and raw fish.

Is sushi healthy?

Fresh sushi can be a nutrient-packed meal if you know what to look for. The main ingredients in the most basic forms of sushi — fish and rice — are naturally low in fat and high in protein and carbohydrates.

The fish used in sushi can also contain several important vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin A, Vitamin B12 and Phosphorus, as well as Omega-3 fatty acids, which have a variety of health benefits. And let’s not forget one of the most nutrient-rich ingredients in any sushi roll: nori (seaweed) used to wrap all of those tasty ingredients together is rich in protein and fiber.
