Before joining Hissho Sushi in 2024, Margaret Maran worked as a sushi helper, a role that sparked her interest in both the culinary craft and the business side of food service. That early experience led her to pursue franchise ownership, combining her love of food with a desire to grow within the industry.

For Margaret, creating sushi is about more than just preparation it’s about sharing something meaningful with others. Since becoming a franchisee, she’s gained new skills, built relationships with customers from all over the world, and developed a deeper understanding of what it takes to run a successful business. Her cultural values show up in her day-to-day approach, where kindness, support, and celebrating diversity are at the center of her work.

Can you share your background prior to coming to Hissho?

Prior to coming to Hissho, I was working as a sushi helper which interested me to learn more about business. 

Can you share any experiences where your cultural perspective positively impacted your interactions with customers or employees?

I think being genuinely helpful to customers and employees daily has helped me impacted my work life positively.

What motivated you to become a Hissho Sushi franchisee and a sushi chef?

The opportunity to grow in the food service industry motivates me to become a Hissho sushi franchisee. The ability to create food to share with loved ones motivated me to become a sushi chef. 

In what ways has your heritage influenced your role as a business owner? Are there ways you celebrate your culture within your franchise location?

I encourage others to learn about culture diversity. 

How has being a business owner impacted your life?

I have been able to gain many new experiences being a business owner that have greatly impacted my life. From learning something new about the industry to meeting international customers that share the same love for sushi as me. 

What are some of your passions outside of your Hissho business? How has your role as a Hissho Sushi chef enabled you to pursue and advance your passions?

Traveling and gardening. Being a chef has enabled me to travel to different climates, allowing me to explore different plants and flowers that surround the area.
