Sui Hlei Par

Est. 2023

Before joining Hissho Sushi in 2023, Sui Hlei Par was a full-time college student working as a CNA at a local nursing home, an experience that deepened her appreciation for care, connection, and community. But her passion for sushi began years earlier, helping her brother with his Hissho franchise while she was still in high school. It was there she discovered a love for the craft, the customer interactions, and the precision behind every roll.

Owning a business has taught her leadership, resilience, and time management and most importantly, it’s given her a sense of purpose. Her cultural background plays a big role in how she runs her business, encouraging inclusivity, storytelling, and a welcoming environment for both her team and her customers.

Can you share your background prior to coming to Hissho?

Before joining Hissho, I dedicated myself to my studies as a full-time college student while simultaneously working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at a local nursing home. This experience honed my interpersonal skills and instilled in me a deep appreciation for community and care.

In 2023, I embarked on an exciting new chapter as a sushi franchise owner, stepping into the world of Hissho Sushi in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This venture allows me to blend my passion for culinary arts with my entrepreneurial spirit, and I am thrilled to bring authentic sushi experiences to the local community.

Can you share any experiences where your cultural perspective positively impacted your interactions with customers or employees?

My cultural background has allowed me to create a welcoming and authentic atmosphere in my store. For example, I frequently share stories about the origins of various sushi varieties, which has increased customer appreciation and engagement.

My commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive environment has improved teamwork and morale, resulting in a more harmonious workplace.

What motivated you to become a Hissho Sushi franchisee and a sushi chef?

In 2017 or 2018, my brother was a Hissho Sushi franchise. During that time, I was a high school student and helped him every weekend. He taught me how to roll sushi and introduced me to various techniques. That experience made me realize how much I loved making sushi and interacting with customers. It motivated me to become a franchisee, especially with Hissho Sushi.

I have always admired the artistry and precision involved in sushi-making. Additionally, the business model and support system offered by Hissho provided the perfect opportunity to combine my culinary passion with my entrepreneurial aspirations.

In what ways has your heritage influenced your role as a business owner? Are there ways you celebrate your culture within your franchise location?

Growing up, my community emphasized the importance of giving one’s best effort, regardless of tangible rewards. I believe in treating others with the same respect and kindness I expect for myself. What truly motivates me is our shared celebration of diverse cultural experiences.

At my Hissho Sushi franchise, I honor my heritage by creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their experiences and connecting with one another.

How has being a business owner impacted your life?

Owning a business has greatly enriched my life by giving me a sense of purpose and the opportunity to lead a team toward a common goal. It has taught me invaluable resilience, time management, and strategic planning lessons. Additionally, it has allowed me to build strong relationships within my community and create a legacy I can be proud of.

What are some of your passions outside of your Hissho business? How has your role as a Hissho Sushi chef enabled you to pursue and advance your passions?

Outside of my business, I am an accounting student, and I am passionate about a lot of things, not just accounting but also hospitality. During this two-year journey with Hissho Sushi, this experience has enabled me to financially support myself in my education. It also allows me to experiment with new recipes and techniques, pushing the boundaries of traditional sushi.

What is your favorite sushi roll?

My favorite sushi roll is the spicy California roll.

I love the perfect balance of fresh krab and spicy mayo and the subtle heat that complements the rice’s sweetness and the seaweed’s slight tang. It’s a classic favorite that consistently delights our customers.
